Plantar FasciitisPlantar Fasciitis is caused by improper movement of the feet which places strain on the plantar fascia that runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. When the plantar fascia becomes strained it can swell and the tiny fibers that make it up may fray. It is often caused by poor mechanics of the foot. A foot that flattens too much may have an overstretched fascia that will swell. A foot with a high arch can have a fascia that aches because it is being pulled tautly.Symptoms are pain in the bottom of the foot while standing or walking, pain localized on the inside of the foot where the heel and arch meet, and reoccurring pain upon movement. A heel spur may occur as a result of the pull on the heel bone from the strained fascia. Bursitis can also develop if the swollen plantar fascia is pressing against a plantar bursa. A podiatrist will perform a comprehensive examination to ascertain your symptoms. They will use this along with any diagnostic tests required to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan for you. If you have Plantar Fasciitis your podiatrist will work on reducing your symptoms first. Then they will work on correcting the problem. Treatment options may include orthoses (custom made shoe inserts), using over the counter medications for pain management, using ice for swelling and pain, prescription pills or shots for pain, physical therapy, and possibly surgery to partially cut the plantar fascia to alleviate the tension. By reducing the strain on the plantar fascia by losing excess weight, avoiding running on hard or uneven surfaces, and wearing supportive shoes you can ease pain in the arch. « Back To Conditions |
